So why is it bad to install a mod chip?

Let’s first talk about the fact that anytime you mess with the hardware inside of a gaming console, it voids the warranty. This means that if anything happens to your PSP during the modification or at any point down the road, you will not be able to send it into Sony to get fixed. You will instead be forced to go out and buy a new PSP, wasting all that money.

Going along with the voided warranty, installing a mod chip isn’t an easy task if you aren’t familiar with how it’s done. The chances of permanently messing up the hardware are very high for someone who hasn’t done a hardware modification before and you could brick the PSP making it not even turn on anymore. A broken PSP combined with a voided warranty means you’re now spending money on a brand new one. Not something that most people want to have happen I’m sure.

Lastly, PSP mod chips can be rather expensive. Most of them run anywhere from $50-$100. Along with the price of the chip, you will probably have to pay someone else to install it for you if you don’t know how yourself.

The Solution?

A software modification, otherwise known as a soft mod, is the way that I recommend you unlock your PSP. A soft mod is exactly what it sounds like, a mod using only software. It’s actually very simple to do unlike a hard mod and it doesn’t void your warranty at all.

The way it works is you download the proper files that you need from the internet, you save the files onto a memory stick, and then you upload that memory stick into your PSP. Once everything is uploaded, your PSP will be unlocked and you will be able to enjoy all the same features as if you used a mod chip.

So the choice is really up to you, but I’m sure you can see which method is better and why. After all, why take the risk of breaking your PSP for good when you can simply install a few files and be good to go? Learning how to unlock PSP with a soft mod is much better in my opinion.

1. You will be able to play Homebrew games and applications. If you’re familiar with the Wii Homebrew at all, this is very similar except it’s for the PSP. Homebrew games and applications are created by the gaming community and made available for anyone to download them to their system and play them. There are tons of different Homebrew files available and more are being added every day.

2. You can make copies of games and run them on your PSP. With the price of games these days, this is a benefit that I think any gamer would love to have. Just think about never having to buy another game again and how much money you will save.

3. You can run emulators from other consoles. With an unlocked PSP, you will be able to enjoy games from other systems such as Nintendo, SNES, N64, Sega Genesis, and more.

4. You will be able to play imported and region locked games. There are some games that are locked to users in certain countries and when you unlock your PSP you will be able to play all of these.

So now that you see all the benefits to unlocking PSP, I’m sure you realize why it’s such a good idea and everything that you’re missing out on. It’s very easy to do and you will be glad that you learned how to unlock PSP.
